There's a new bill in Oregon which would prohibit police from releasing booking photos except for in specific circumstances and would require publish-for-pay publications to remove mugshots upon request. Juan Chavez of the Oregon Justice Resource Center said mugshots “results in trial by press release, not a judge or jury. And make no mistake, in this day and age, this is the digital version of a perp walk.” I haven't put too much thought into this, though my gut reaction is that a little public shamming is probably a good way to dissuade radicals from being radicals. But the real point I'd like to make is that the mugshots have served as a means of countering the narrative that the Portland riots and vandalism weren't done by Antifa/leftist but instead by far right radicals.
